David,
Some of my most vivid memories are also challenges or voyages. Wish I could have traveled to France with you. I used to speak French fluently, but alas, it has been many years now. Oh how I adore little french hamlets. Have a great weekend--Marie
PS-Gretchen is quite fetching in that photo

I second Marie. That's a wonderful photo of you two! Thank you for sharing these recollections. They were evocative, and allowed me to journey along in a virtual sense. I can close my eyes and picture sitting on rocks above a tide line, now.

Mmmm. Just lovely.

Lovely picture (congruent with you two lovely people). This is one of my favorite of your posts, David. It really captured the complexity, joy, lure and sometimes frustration of travelling outside our usual orbits.

Your post reminded me of a lovely Japanese film called 'Afterlife', which examines the question "What is the one memory you would take with you?" when you die. Recommended.
