I feel one of the most overlooked and often broken rule of being an entrepreneur is this:

ANSWER YOUR PHONE

DO NOT rely on an answering machine. If you cannot afford someone to answer the phone, answer it yourself, preferably within three rings. That ringing telephone just might be a customer - you can't afford to take the chance that some electronic device might cause his message to be missed!
He's calling to talk to you, not your machine.

Whew! I feel better. Thanks, David, for letting me get that off my chest. I suspect you would agree with me.

Re: phones, be careful of VoIP. It certainly has advantages, however the disadvantages can be disruptive. Depending on the end equipment (yours and the carrier's), the carrier's network robustness and class of service settings, VoIP can be a good service, or it can cause significant clipping, missed calls (& voice mails) and other issues.

Business deserves a land line, no ifs, ands or buts about it. It's a respect thing.

I would suggest that the most basic consideration is readiness. Are you really prepared to leave behind the unacceptable and leap into the unknown? Especially without a safety net.

Readiness implies more than just desire. It infers that you have the ways and the means to succeed.

I would remind all of the First Law of Wing Walking: Never leave go of the rope until you have something else to hold onto.

"Come to the edge," He said. They said, "We are afraid." "Come to the edge," He said. They came. He pushed them... and they flew. ~ Guillaume Apollinaire

Daedalus conceived to escape from the Labyrinth with Icarus by constructing wings and then flying to safety.

He built the wings from feathers and wax, and before the two set off he warned Icarus not to fly too low lest his wings touch the waves and get wet, and not too high lest the sun melt the wax.

But the young Icarus, overwhelmed by the thrill of flying, did not heed his father's warning, and flew too close to the sun, whereupon the wax in his wings melted and he fell into the sea.

Excellent comments all!

I particularly agree with the necessity of answering your phone, and your email promptly and personally.

Have a land line as backup if you wish, but VOIP offers local exchange numbers and carrier-class service in many parts of the country. You can provide toll-free calling for customers and many other features for much less than the cost of your land line.

The wing walking analogy and the Icarus legend have a great deal of truth in them. Staying in the labyrinth offers a safe, slow death while flying to safety requires courage skill, and judgement. Two out of three will not make it.

I have written more on overcoming the biggest barrier to starting your own business here. http://ripples.typepad.com/ripples/2006/04/the_biggest_bar.html
