Thank you for this very positive perspective on the current situation in the US --and the world. Being of the same generation, I do think there is much to be learned from the current experience. It seems to me that things had gotten a bit out of hand, a bit shallow. Nothing like a wake up call to help one re-sort one's priorities.

I did not grow up during the Great Depression, but all of the family stories from that time are positive ones. My mother's father combined farming with carpentry, railroad work, and child care, and his wife worked as a teacher. My father's father also worked on the railroads, and his wife was a nurse.

Successful formula: recession-proof professions, trades, partial self-sufficiency in food, and a disruptive technology industry!

(Is it any wonder I've never been altogether charmed with the corporate scheme of economic survival based on political position and "soft skills"?!)

sadly hard times also bring out the worst in others...

I am not so sure that their "worst" comes and goes. In good times, another's weakness or deceit may not be as visible, or damaging.

You may actually have been placing trust in someone who does not deserve it and never did.

After all, in good times there is money and time to spare. You may be carrying the load for others and be unaware that you are being taken advantage of.

It is when you turn to someone for support and that support is denied that you finally get a measure of the other person's character.

It can be quite unsettling.
