I would just like to throw out there that the job of pundits and interpreters is to save you time. That's the value they provide.

I don't have the time to go research every little thing to understand what it means to me, so I check with blogs and news media I trust. The source is good to know about, but I wasn't around when some important events happened, so I might not know the significance of current events.

Obama or Palin might say something truthful...or they might not. Getting the source is nice, but I don't think it is fair to say that conjecture and rumor is unimportant. Palin resigned, and people wondered why. Politicians resign from office to run for higher office, so the questions of whether or not she was planning on running for an executive branch office seemed valid to me. Obama once said he wouldn't run for President, too, so I think it is fair to speculate that she might make her own run.

But then, from my point of view, I've heard Palin both with and without a teleprompter, so I think I know the difference between her prepared statements and her spontaneous thinking. Twitter usage by celebrities and politicians are almost always ghost-written and/or prepared statements.

And again, I don't get paid to digest and interpret newsworthy events. It would be more than a full-time job just to keep up. Therefore, a market exists for pundits and reporters to tell me what's newsworthy and ignore what isn't. The danger comes from taking what they tell me is newsworthy and accepting the judgment and the news on its face.

All that said, you're right, but I'd like to emphasize each person's responsibility to get to the truth of "news". In the past, it was very difficult to do your own research, so you almost had to accept that news reports were factually accurate. Today, it is still difficult, but so much easier, to find out if Bush was pushing for amnesty for illegal immigrants or how much of Obama's budget is made up of new spending.

But again, unless people are willing to put in the effort, they'll still need to rely on someone to tell them what's happening and why it is important. There's just not enough hours in the day for everyone to do their jobs, spend time with their families, AND investigate news.
